7.0.1 under review

Mozilla has released a chemspill for 7, but not for the bug you would expect (viz., the BEAST SSL issue we talked about last blog entry). Instead, this release covers bug 680802 and an unusual case where simultaneously trying to update the browser and an add-on causes the add-on to be apparently lost (in reality it is simply hidden and doing operations in the Add-on Manager will "resurrect" it).

After reviewing the bug, this appears to be another case where our more limited functionality saves us again. Although I can think of some scenarios where you could get a simultaneous update, because TenFourFox forces you to download a whole new copy of the browser for updates due to our more limited infrastructure you will rarely be updating both add-ons and the browser at the exact same time; instead, you update TenFourFox, it downloads new versions, and life goes on. It is possible to trip the bug, but you really have to work at it and I'll just let you think of how that might occur. I have only had one report of Adblock getting waxed updating to 7.0, and the user was able to manually restore it afterwards.

Because point releases are expensive for us and because I believe the risk is low, the current plan is not to release a 7.0.1. If you are one of those few unfortunate people who did manage to figure out how to louse up the browser and your add-ons, Mozilla has an add-on (ha!) that will temporarily patch the issue. You can download the add-on repair tool from Mozilla directly. Please report any irregularities.

8.0 beta is currently running in debugging mode internally. Mozilla, damn them, has significantly rewritten large portions of the widget toolkit requiring some extensive backouts and patching to work on 10.4, so we will likely drop parity shortly with widgets. The browser, however, basically works and I hope to have the beta out by the end of the week. There are some great TenFourFox-specific features in it too. More about that soon.

  1. I loose my add-ons all the time on my G3.

  2. This is a specific issue with simultaneous updates. It is unlikely to repair your issue, but you can try the add-on repair tool and see. Short of that, for a bug report, I'll need more information to determine this is truly a bug and not simply the (unfortunately expected) churn in version compatibility.

  3. I don't know how to recreate it, I was clearing it by launching FF 3.6 & installing any add-ons that needed to be installed. That fixed it & now add-on repair tool fixes it. It happens when restarting TFF, not upgrading TFF.

  4. As an addendum I know it has occurred because all the buttons from the Google toolbar are gone and are empty in the Google toolbar preference menu.

  5. I lose ALL add-ons at the same time. Add-ons Manager reports "You have no Add-ons of this type" (paraphrase) & it has been happening with past versions also.

  6. Hey...this has nothing to do with this thread or TenFourFox (Which I love by the way!), but does anyone know how to or a link to tell me how to fix an iBook G4 1.33 ghz 12 in? When I get it to run, it works great, but I think that it has the video chip issue that the previous g4s had and I don't know which chip on the logic board is the video chip...Sorry for this intrusion with something completely unrelated, but I figured if anyone might have info it would be people who love the PowerPC computers!

    Thanks

  7. pjpreilly, your user profile might be damaged. I would suggest the following: Export your bookmarks as an html file (and data from addons if possible), then close TFF. Go to your user Library/Application Support and rename or compress or otherwise backup the Firefox folder. Then start TFF 7.0. It will create a new Firefox folder (containing your new user profile). Import your bookmarks from the html file.

Jeremiah, you may find help over at LowEndMac or at the RetroMaccast:
http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/g-books.html (there are more lists covering PPC iBooks)
    http://retromaccast.ning.com/groups
You may also want to have a look at the repair manual: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iBook_G4_12%22_1.33_GHz.
But to be honest, if it does have the video issue, it might not be worth the time and effort trying to repair it. It's a logic board failure, and there's not much you can do about it anyway. These machines are cheap on eBay nowadays.

  8. Oh, and the short answer would be that the chip labeled ATI is most likely the video card :-)

  9. pjpreilly, I forgot to say: When you're done, install the most recent versions of your addons and import any data you saved such as filter rules for adblock or the like.
