Time Warner: still sucks

We're still down and Time Warner Cable Business Class just sent out their third site survey to say, "we'll call you." I've had it with this company. Don't ever do business with them. I'm preparing a complaint to their legal counsel this week; this is unacceptably bad.

The problem is that this means our build system has no access to the Net either, so it can't pull down code and that makes building another 6.0 beta problematic. Unfortunately for us, Mozilla is still planning to release Firefox 6 on schedule, issues with Fennec permitting. One option is to build an interim security release "5.0.2" with whatever patches I can cobble together and then sneakernet the binaries off the G5 so that at least we maintain security parity. If our downtime extends up to that point, then we might try that. However, you'd have to watch this blog since obviously the automatic update system doesn't work either. I'm really hoping they get it together soon, because although I could request for and grit my teeth over a T1, it's going to be itself at least two weeks installation and I can't even start on that as long as I have an enforceable contract with Time Worthless.

I have never dealt with a company this awful, and I'll be doing my darndest not to renew with them when the contract is up. They are truly abysmal. If this is how they treat their business customers, I'm sure many of you have horror stories about how they treat their residential ones.

More as I have more information.

  1. Don't let them bother you, Cameron. Don't know what others think but I believe we're fine without an interim security release.

    Thanks for all your efforts!

  2. Service totally sucks these days - no matter who you deal with.

Even though I regularly (obsessively) check for TenFourFox updates, I'm quite happy with how well it works already and very grateful for all the effort put into it.

    Thanks very much!

  3. Sorry to hear this. I was in a similar situation when I moved some years ago. I got by somehow with unsecured WiFi access points in my 16 story building (there's always one…) and a community based public free WiFi network in my city , but that's not a serius option when you need to do business. I wish I could lengthen my network cable a bit to share my connection. Also, by the way, I don't deal with ISPs that don't let you terminate your contract within 30 days. Why there are still companies that force you into two-year contracts is beyond me, given the speed that lines get faster and prices drop nowadays.

  4. Firstly, many commiserations for your travails with Time Warner - I can understand how frustrated you must feel. But, to echo mr_a500's comment above, TenFourFox is working just fine for me. It's a thoughtful and very useful thing you've done to create it, and your endeavours on behalf of we Powerbook users are genuinely very much appreciated. Now, if you can figure out a way to make our video run smoothly again , that would be great too :-)

  5. Thank you for the hard work developing version 6 TenFourFox, yes, it works great om my PBG4 and my dual 2.0 PowerMac G5, one question, what does one do in loosing Adobe 10.1? I tend to use a small game site called Kongregate, but they require adobe 10, any way around it other then closing your web browser and using the old Firefox 3?
    Thanks

  6. Marc, you can enable plugins by typing about:config into the URL bar, then in the filter bar that appears at the top of the page type tenfourfox.plugins, finally double-click the variable tenfourfox.plugins.enabled so that the value changes from false to true.

Restart TenFourFox and you're away laughing.

Fans of youtube might also want to look at the extension smartvideo, which allows you to default to the 240p version of videos on youtube like it used to back when PowerBooks were new.

Also I can't recommend using something like adblock, flashblock or clicktoflash to make sure that your performance isn't stung by unwanted flash content.

  7. Ahem, I can't recommend *highly enough* using one of the add-ons to reduce flash intrusions.
